I am certain many, or most, if not all who read this know the Fruit of the Spirit as listed in Galatians chapter 5.
Recently, a group of seven, including our lead Pastor, started an intercessory Prayer group to meet once a month to pray for our church, Pastors and congregation.
There has been another group meeting once a month for a few years, and a couple more to start in New Year. Each Saturday morning will then be a time of prayer for the following day, and for those involved.
Before the first meeting of this group took place, the leader asked each person to seek God, see what God is saying to our church, and share it on the Saturday. Much Godly Wisdom came forth, as to where the church was, is, and is going. As long as we seek and obey God, we will see many prophecies fulfilled.
Back to Galatians chapter five, and a few things that stood out to me.
Holy Spirit is who produces His Fruit in our lives. We cannot produce good healthy Spiritual Fruit on our own.
In the flesh, we can do many things that appear good, the same as many persons who are not Christ Followers do things to help others, and their lives seem good.
I believe there is a major difference though. These are Fruit of the Spirit we are discussing. Holy Spirit is God. God is Love. Therefore I take it that the base, or cause of action in each Fruit of the Spirit is Godly Love.
Let’s look at a few as examples. When something is delayed in life, or held back from us, what is our reaction? It is possible to appear calm and quiet on the outside, while speaking to someone about the situation, but be boiling on the inside.
I believe if we have Patience as a Fruit of the Spirit, the Love of God will be at the base of the Patience, and we will look at the situation through the eyes of Jesus, and see what benefit this delay can be. Perhaps there is someone nearby who Holy Spirit will direct us to go and speak to, or perhaps it will be a quiet time when God desires to speak with us.
How about “kindness” as a Fruit of the Spirit? It is possible, and many non Christ followers are kind people. Again though, what is the motive or reason behind the acts of kindness? As a Christ follower, our reasons should be to sincerely be a blessing to others, and to Glorify God. When our actions are God centred, they are Love centred, and there should be no thoughts as to how we may benefit because of our actions.
In going through each of the Fruit listed in Galatians 5:22-26, consider each one, with God’s Love as the base, and purpose for our actions.
Galatians 5:22-26 NLT
But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control; and here there is no conflict with Jewish laws. Those who belong to Christ have nailed their natural evil desires to his cross and crucified them there. If we are living now by the Holy Spirit’s power, let us follow the Holy Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. Then we won’t need to look for honors and popularity, which lead to jealousy and hard feelings.
