Clothing Ourselves For God’s Service

“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:12-17‬ ‭ESV‬‬

As Christ Followers we have preparation each day before we meet the world. Many are aware of the instruction in Ephesians 6: to put on the full armour of God, which we can elaborate more on at another time. In this passage we will clothe ourselves with items that may be noticed by a greater number of people.

We are to put on compassionate hearts.

Compassion: a feeling of wanting to help someone who is sick, hungry, in trouble, etc.

Compassionate: feeling or showing concern for someone who is sick, hurt, poor, etc. : having or showing compassion

Imagine if every time, every day we were out and about, we were compassionate to someone. This can be asking someone how they are doing, genuinely asking rather than in passing. Or if we know someone who is ill or hurting in some way, contact them and see how things are.

Think of the difference we Christ Followers will make in our community.

Kindness: : the quality or state of being kind

: a kind act

Synonyms: attentive, considerate, thoughtful, solicitous

Humility: : the quality or state of not thinking you are better than other people : the quality or state of being humble

Meekness: : having or showing a quiet and gentle nature : not wanting to fight or argue with other people

Possibly these next three, following compassion, could be combined. Once we are wearing the layer of compassion, we will be prepared to put on kindness, humility, and meekness.

When our heart is clothed with compassion, we will have a tendency to be attentive to those around us who may be in need, and be considerate of them and see how we can help, and this will be considered to be kind to other individuals.

As someone is being helped, it is done as helping an equal, a peer, not as if there are different levels of humanity, help is given with humility.

It is also important not to force our ways onto someone if they do not agree. If there is an alternative solution in a difficult situation, but the person we speak with doesn’t see or accept it, we don’t argue or fight, but with the meekness of Jesus we allow the situation to remain as we back away.

Patience:: the capacity, habit, or fact of being patient

Patient: : able to remain calm and not become annoyed when waiting for a long time or when dealing with problems or difficult people

: done in a careful way over a long period of time without hurrying

Forgiving: : able or willing to forgive someone or something

Forgive: : to stop feeling anger toward (someone who has done something wrong) : to stop blaming (someone)

: to stop feeling anger about (something) : to forgive someone for (something wrong)

At times the most difficult item to wear consistently, even when we are clothed with compassion, kindness, humility, and meekness, is patience. When things don’t seem to be going right, or as we figure they should, when someone we are speaking with chooses to argue rather than listen or try an alternative solution, we need to be patient, as Jesus Christ has been patient with us.

The number of times our Lord Jesus has forgiven me is many more than I have been required to forgive others, and even IF it wasn’t, what I have done, sinning against the God of the universe, is way beyond whatever has been done to me. I need to have an attitude of forgiveness and then use it to forgive any who ask forgiveness, and even forgive those who do not ask.

Love: : to stop feeling anger toward (someone who has done something wrong) : to stop blaming (someone)

: to stop feeling anger about (something) : to forgive someone for (something wrong)

1 a : to make secure by tying

b : to confine, restrain, or restrict as if with bonds

c : to put under an obligation <binds himself with an oath>

d : to constrain with legal authority

2 a : to wrap around with something so as to enclose or cover

Harmony: a pleasing combination or arrangement of different things

The love of Jesus has to be in me, and flow through me at all times to others. Anger, blame, grudges, cannot be held against anyone. If any of these are held against some, that blocks love from being given to that person.

It is love that will hold each of the other articles of apparel in place. As love holds everything in place, and binds all things together, they will work in harmony to the Glory of Jesus, for his Kingdom.

God’s Blessings.
