“When He saw the crowds, He was moved with compassion and pity for them, because they were dispirited and distressed, like sheep without a shepherd.”
MATTHEW 9:36 AMP
Jesus had compassion and pity on those who were dispirited and distressed. He saw them as sheep without a shepherd, lost in the middle of a crowd, yet Jesus, The Good Shepherd, was right there with them, within reach, and many could not comprehend.
As Jesus walked through the town’s, villages etc., He healed many, as the verses prior to the above verse stated. Many people, forming large crowds gathered around Jesus in most places wherever He was.
It is noted here, in particular, that He was moved with compassion and pity for them. He actually took note of the people around him, even if they were not bothering with Him being in their midst.
Perhaps it is self check time. Walking down a street; through a business section, or a Downtown area; through a mall, there are people all around, many are probably dispirited and distressed, but do we notice, or are we too busy?
How about the young man we see continually, walking back and forth, who is mentally challenged; or the teenage mother having a difficult time with her baby or the young people who don’t meet “our dress code” in public; or the regular elderly gentlemen who gather in the same area, same chairs every day, because they are lonely, no place else to go, or no one else to see?
Many of these people are dispirited and distressed, with the primary reason being they do not know Jesus Christ as Saviour, and Lord of their life. I know we are not Jesus, and we cannot heal each person. We can have sympathy though on each, and the situation they appear to be in.
At times it may be possible to strike up a conversation with someone who looks lonely and distressed.
At times, it is Spirit led, to sit in a mall as though people watching, but praying for certain persons who pass by, that Holy Spirit draws to attention. It is a blessing.
We are to be a Light in the dark world, salt to give flavour to the world and draw people to Jesus, and to be Christlike and an ambassador for Christ.
We are not alone. Holy Spirit is within all who call upon Jesus as Saviour, and Holy Spirit is our Guide, Strength, Empowerer.
