Hearing God: Making Sure It Is God
1 Kings 13:7-10
And the king said to the man of God, “Come home with me, and refresh yourself, and I will give you a reward.”
8. And the man of God said to the king, “If you give me half your house, I will not go in with you. And I will not eat bread or drink water in this place,
9. for so was it commanded me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water nor return by the way that you came.’”
10. So he went another way and did not return by the way that he came to Bethel.
1 Kings 13:18-19
And he said to him, “I also am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘Bring him back with you into your house that he may eat bread and drink water.’” But he lied to him.
19. So he went back with him and ate bread in his house and drank water.
Following a time of heavy ministry, when following the lead of Holy Spirit, where battle has been done against the forces of evil, physical tiredness or fatigue can set in, and guards may be let down.
Just prior to the above Scripture in 1 Kings 13:7-10, the man of God (prophet) was led out of Judah by God, to Bethel. This was because Jeroboam, the King of Judah, due to jealousy of King Rehoboam, King of Israel, had built two golden calves for the people to worship. Jeroboam also built temples and anointed priests who were not from the tribe of Levi.
It was for these reasons that the Prophet was sent by God to confront Jeroboam. Signs were given to Jeroboam by God through the Prophet. When Jeroboam told his men to seize the Prophet, his hand seized up so he could not use it. Also, the altar was torn down and ashes poured out of it, as the Prophet had said. When the Prophet called upon God, Jeroboam’s hand was restored.
According to the instructions of God, the Prophet then left the area to go home, by a different way than he had come.Soon after, an old prophet followed and caught up to the man of God. The old prophet lied to the man of God telling him that God had given a message, that the man of God should return, and go to the old prophet’s place to eat. The man of God believed and followed the old prophet to his place, to eat and drink.
At this time, the old prophet did actually get a word from God for the man of God, rebuking him for disobedience, and telling him his punishment, that his burial would not be with his forefathers.
The false word actually came from a prophet of God, but the man spoke on his own, the first time, and then spoke a true word the second time.
This is a reminder to each Christian to seek God at all times. Even when a Christian tells us something, if it is counter to God’s Word, we know it is not right; if it is counter to something God has previously told us directly by dream, vision, or prophetic word, check with God again to confirm the truth.
As mentioned earlier, following a time of ministering, particularly if it is intense, we need to be alert and discerning, because the enemy attacks ferociously at those times.
God speaks truth, and He will confirm His will to us if we are in doubt, but we need to seek Him, and listen for His voice.
