“The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; they have eyes, but do not see; they have ears, but do not hear, nor is there any breath in their mouths. Those who make them become like them, so do all who trust in them.”Psalm 135:15-18 ESV
Very few people who live in this century, have idols of silver, gold, or any such valuable material.
But there are many who worship a false god, a god made to their own liking, a god who they think they control, but it actually controls them.
This god of theirs could be money, meaning they work long hours, attempting to make as much money as possible to invest, or leave sit in a bank account. They check it often, and talk about their wealth often.
Other false gods can be hobbies, sports, tv, gambling, addictions, anything that takes much of the time in a person’s life. Strange as it may seem, even religion may become a false god. That happens when a person commits all their time to “doing”. Even though the activities may be good, if these activities are of our own choosing, and not directed by our True God, and empowered by His Spirit, we are serving these religious activities, or ministries, and not God. This service has become worship, worship of ourselves, or worship of our deeds, even if it is not realized.
Whatever the mind focuses on, and whatever consumes our time, becomes a god to us, and all the time spent is actually in worship to that false god that has been set up.
Our focus needs to be on our LORD JESUS CHRIST. It is He Who gave His life for us, so we may have eternal life with Him. When we accept Jesus as Saviour, we also receive the Holy Spirit, Who will live within us, and guide our thoughts, words and actions, so each is pleasing and honouring to Jesus Christ.
