Interceding For Others“And the Lord appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth and said, “O Lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant.” Genesis 18:1-3 ESV
“So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. Then Abraham drew near and said, “Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked?” Genesis 18:22-23 ESV
“Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.”
And the Lord went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.” Genesis 18:32-33 ESV
We see in this passage that The Lord Himself, along with two others, Angels it is believed, came to visit Abraham. As the three were about to leave Abraham, after eating, Abraham started a conversation with the Lord. Abraham knew the Lord was going to go and destroy Sodom because of the wickedness, and pleaded for the Lord to not destroy Sodom, bargaining with the Lord until he arrived at the point of agreement if there were 10 righteous people in Sodom, God would not destroy it.
This is a good example of interceding for others. Abraham knew his nephew Lot was not living a righteous life, pleasing to the Lord, in Sodom, so he pleaded with the Lord not to destroy the town if there were 10 righteous there.
Intercession prayer can be hard work at prayer, perhaps not seeing results for a long time, but it is rewarding when results are seen, as well as knowing the Presence of God while praying.
I am sure all Christ Followers have some family members and friends who don’t have a relationship with Jesus Christ. I do, and at times laziness sets in, as the enemy slyly plants thoughts that this isn’t working, there is no hope, give up.
Remember, that is all the enemy can do, is plant thoughts and ideas in our minds, he has been defeated. He was defeated by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We, as Christ Followers, have the Spirit of Jesus, the same Spirit who raised Jesus Christ from the dead, within us. So we have Victory and Power. We have the Name of Jesus to proclaim, whenever attacks or temptations come against us.
When interceding for others in prayer, we pray specifically when possible. We come against habits or lifestyles that are blocking a person from hearing and responding to the call of the Holy Spirit. We ask Jesus to put blockades up when necessary, and bring other persons into the friend’s life who we are praying for, who will be a positive influence. We ask Jesus to have bad influences removed in some way, by job transfers, moving or any number of ways. We do the praying, in Jesus Name, and the Holy Spirit will minister in the person’s life.
