Amos 1:1

“The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa—-“

Tekoa was a small town about 6 miles from Bethlehem, and Amos was a shepherd. There is nothing striking about either of those statements that would impress anyone. It is not known if Amos owned the sheep, or cared for the sheep of another person, but even if he was the owner, he did not hire others to do the work for him.

Amos had a willing heart, and an open spirit to hear the voice of God, when God spoke to him. When God spoke, Amos listened and then was obedient. When Amos spoke the words God had given him, Amos did not have a fear of what others would think, and nothing is noted of Amos checking with others first, before obeying God.

Throughout the generations, God has used a variety of people to speak through, to give direction, and to give warning.

There was a variance in these people as to status, wealth and position in society.

The Word of God says that God looks at the heart of a person, not at the outside of a person (1 Samuel 16:7).

The Word of God also says that God has a plan for each person’s life (Ephesians 2:10).

Each of us, whatever our position is in this life, is called to serve our God. It does not matter if a person is highly educated in the finest of the education facilities. It does not matter if a person has years of study in Bible school. It does not matter if a person is a general labourer or an executive.  What does matter is if our hearts and spirits are tuned in to God’s Channel and we allow ourselves to hear the voice of His Spirit when He speaks.

When we hear the Voice of the Spirit of God, we need to heed what He is saying, and follow His instructions. Every time the Spirit of God speaks to us, it is important, no matter what our thoughts on the matter may be. Sometimes the words may seem minor, but if we obey what we are being told, there will be major results. We may not always see the results, but if our God has directed our path, His direction serves a powerful purpose.

Right at this time, some of us may be hearing God’s Voice, and not be sure that it is God. Ask Him, and He will clarify it. Some may be unsure, or hesitant to speak or act as the Spirit of God is directing. Whatever God is saying to do, do it and you will have a peace within that only the Spirit of God can give. For some, this may be stepping outside our comfort zone, but that is the way God enables us to grow spiritually, and grow closer to be the person He has called us to be.

Whatever our position in life, God knows exactly where we are, and He desires to fulfill the purpose He planted within us. Remember Amos, the shepherd,  he was obedient to God, and was willing to step outside his comfort zone of tending sheep to proclaim the words God gave him
